Teater My

Lyrical theatre for the very small

With its special brand of quiet lyricism, Theatre My specializes in plays aimed at the very youngest audiences, introducing the under-fours to the unique world of the theatre through highly visual productions which demonstrate a tremendous feel for the simple stories and images that small children love.

Mette Rosleff
Born in 1969, this self-taught actor worked with a number of different Danish theatre companies before founding Theatre My in 2001.

Artistic profile
In Danish ’My’ means ’Micron’, and Theatre My specializes in productions on a micro scale for children aged four and under.  These visually rich plays are notable for a simplicity which charms children and fascinates grown-ups.

At the heart of these productions is artistic director and actor Mette Rosleff, spellbinding audiences with her quiet charisma and warm presence.  With their sure sense for storytelling her plays demonstrate a great respect for the importance of their role: representing as they do the child’s very first encounter with the magic of the theatre.  The stories they tell focus on themes with which small children can relate: this wonderful life, in which anything can happen and where the big can be found within the small.

Theatre My possesses a rare gift for generating an air of intimacy in its productions, all of which last for about 30 minutes.  In so doing it create a secure atmosphere for the children, while at the same time stimulating their spirit of adventure and their capacity for wonder.  Stage-sets which spring sudden surprises, inanimate objects brought to life - these weave a magic guaranteed to leave tiny theatregoers wide-eyed and open-mouthed.

Review extracts

"A micron is a very small unit, but Theatre My is big.  Splendid theatre for the very small."
Berlingske Tidende (DK), Land of the Sun

"Lille Py/Little Py has the lot: security, closeness, atmospheric music, lots to look at, lots of insights into human depth, and glimpses of great poetry.  An amusing and lyrically powerful picture poem to be savoured long afterwards in memory."
Børneteateravisen (DK), Little Py

"Himmelsange, which also boasts an excellent musical accompaniment, is bursting with joie de vivre, and with gratitude for life itself.  Here one is treated to the intense experience of  two groups which know just how to present children with an intimate and marvellously artistic piece that the kids obviously lapped up.  As did we grown-ups."
Århus Stiftstidende (DK), Himmelsange

Quote

”The attentiveness of small children has always fascinated me. Looking down into their eyes from the stage I am struck by how receptive they are, drinking in the whole thing. Often, I represent their first experience of the theatre, and I feel it is important to give them a quiet break from their hectic day-to-day routine, in this introduction to the poetry and magic of the theatre.”
