Dramatist - Gerz Feigenberg

Against All Odds, We Will Survive in the End

Is life simply random chance or do we have real choices?  Feigenberg develops this theme in melodramatic plots – planes that crash, murder by poison, lies as black as the letters home from doomed soldiers on the front line.

He mirrors the contemporary gallery of selfish pigs, well-meaning dreamers, and naive blondes, which he culls from actual events on the world stage – from shipwrecks to burning cult churches to the superficial lives of supermodels.

His controversial castigations of our administration of life are interspersed by live music and often performed in untraditional theatre space – dramaturgical ingredients that emphasize the lack of fixed contours.  Feigenberg applies this as well to ethical values.  An absurd fact that the dramatist exploits humoristically with a predilection for slapstick.

The tone is Noël Coward with wit and biting, modern cynicism that swings to despair and back again.  Therefore, the messages hit as self-ironic commentaries on the impossibility of living up to a high moral code – and the possibility of tipping over into double standards.

The point of Tilfældighedens Engel [The Angel of Chance] from 2000 is that the human brain detests chance, just as, in classical physics, nature detests a vacuum.  Does chance govern our lives?  Of course, says Feigenberg.  But we are alchemists, and we immediately transform the meaningless into the meaningful.

Feigenberg has not been translated yet but, given his unique voice and international themes, it is only a matter of time.

WACO
(2006)
Waco is a place, a myth and a condition – an extreme longing that leads to destruction.  A female preacher of the apocalypse and the pilot who dropped the bomb on Hiroshima fight tooth-and-nail to push a young man to become either a Warrior or a Saviour.  Will he end up completely brainwashed at the WACO military hospital?  Or will he be able to unite the cardinal virtues of the sexes?

Review Extracts

Feigenberg takes the historyless, the perspectiveless and the purblind to school with a dramaturgical coup (...) When Feigenberg is sharp, he is dangerous and, among the night-course theatre-goers, there is not a Birkenstock left.”

”We have a problem giving ourselves to each other.  Instead, we strive for the most ambitious goals.  To earn a million before we are 20, to sleep with every girl, or to get through life without being hurt.”
