Alexa Ther

A Euro-cosmopolitan makes Denmark her own

Alexa Ther. Born 1954 in Germany. Theatre director. Studied art and theatre, then trained at the Max Reinhardt Seminary, Vienna. Assistant director in Germany, then moved to Denmark 1980. Directing since 1982.

Artist Profile

Alexa Ther worked her way to the core of Danish Theatre from an outpost in the theatrical landscape, the cult-status group Dr. Dante. In over 5 productions in 6 years - including Hamlet and The Seagull – she challenged professionals as well as talented amateurs with the demands of a searching, contemporary, classically-trained directing style. And was noticed immediately.
She merges her Central European experience with a deep and keen eye for a given actor’s potential. This capacity has made her both a much-sought teacher at The Danish National School of Theatre and the top billboard attraction for a demanding audience. She approaches classics – like Holberg, Marivaux and Strindberg – with highly-charged, enthusiastic comprehension and contemporary darkness-in-a-Nietzschean-space – like Shopping and Fucking (Mark Ravenhill), West Pier (Bernard-Marie Koltès) and Ci-vi-li-sa-ti-on (Claus Beck-Nielsen) – with a cool and steady hand.

For a decade, Alexa Ther has worked almost exclusively with scenographer Rikke Juellund, exchanging – at a very early stage – visions and scenic imagery for the final concept.
Leading to magnificent artistic visualizations in, e.g., School for Wives, Antigone, and Measure for Measure.

Quote

”These magical moments are the amalgamation of a nuanced physical realization and some very clear technically-rendered linguistic fantasies. This requires actors to have the courage to abandon themselves. It demands more presence on the stage. And it demands more time to delve into the material than there often is. So, there are lots of times when it almost happens…”
